The Basics

The Storycaster system revolves around the Story Elements. These are the basic building blocks for any great story. The Storycaster gameplay loop takes you through each Story Element with illustrated prompt cards, and randomized question cards, to help you lay the foundations for your campaign, and facilitate further creation.

First: you choose the setting or IP you’d like campaign to take place in. Second: you use your illustrated prompt cards to answer randomized questions specifically designed to help you build the campaign setting from the ground up in the World Building Phase.

Once the campaign setting is established, use focused illustrated prompts and question cards in the Creation Phase to flesh out characters, bad guys, monsters, items… whatever you want to bring to your TTRPG!

The Story Elements

The World Building Phase

Each question prompt card has an open-ended section to cover broad story beats and a specific section to explore the details that give your world flavor.

Each illustrated prompt card is designed to kickstart your creativity and serve as a visual reference.

First: get a quick impression of your illustrated prompt card and give it a name. Second: summarize the narrative hook that jumps out of the art. Third: answer a randomized question designed to develop your world and give it flavor. Repeat the process for every Story Element and create a fantastic world that can be used in the following game section: The Creation Phase.

The Creation Phase

The Creation Phase takes the foundations laid down in the World Building Phase and allows you to create legendary items, fearsome monsters, unforgettable characters, and more.

First: choose the card that represents the thing you want to create in this world: your Focus; be it a PC, NPC, boss, monster, item, etc. Second: give it a name and lay out its physical characteristics. Third: draw unique question prompt cards use them to connect your Focus to the Region, Places, Factions, Characters, and Details you laid down in the World Building Phase. 

And that’s it! By following this simple, fun system, you’ll get a lived-in world filled with interesting people, places, cultures, events and backstories to explore in the campaign. On top of that, you’ll get three-dimensional PCs, NPCs, monsters… that are ready for adventure!
